Description
Equalizer RT – Fault Ride Through Solution
Fault Ride Through
The Equalizer RT is a real-time high performance power quality solution designed to deliver substantial reactive power even during a Fault Ride Through (FRT) or Voltage Ride Though (VRT) event where a very deep voltage sag occurs.
The Equalizer RT transient free static compensation system has been modified in order to boost supplied kVAr capacity for short time during these voltage dips and has an ultra fast acquisition time and can fully compensate for the voltage sag within less than 10 milliseconds.
The modification makes a transient free connection of capacitors in a Voltage Control operation mode. The Voltage control mode is optimised to fulfill the PO12.3 Grid Code requirements.
Grid Code PO12.3
The Grid Code PO12.3 specifically refers how renewable generation projects need to be able to handle Voltage Ride Through (also known as Fault Ride Through or FRT) events and defines the requirements to ensure installations such as wind farms stay connected to the network during short voltage dips. As an example, for wind turbines this means that during voltage disturbances there should be provision for reactive power support to prevent the wind farms from disconnecting.
Voltage Ride Through
This ability to “ride through” voltage dips ensures that wind power plants do not disconnect from the grid by using the Equalizer RT to provide essential voltage support during such events.
Key Features of the Equalizer RT
The Elspecs Equalizer RT is a highly accurate real time power quality system that compensates reactive power and eliminate voltage drops. The system uses ultra-high power thyristor switching technology, providing transient free smooth switching by connecting capacitors at zero-crossing. The Equalizer RT offers many features in one simple solution and it is a unique system that compensates low to medium voltage loads in real time. Medium voltage loads can be compensated through a step up transformer.
Case Study
Learn more about the Equalizer RT in the case study found in our Newsroom. The study shows how the Elspec Equalizer RT test installation successfully provided dynamic ride through compensation for an asynchronous 1.5 MS turbine. The study also provides results that show how the Equalizer RT can be a solution for applications like those found in the FRT Spanish PO 12.3 Grid Code requirements.
